Tilly Lockey:"My superpower is self-confidence"

She is 13 years old and a fighter: bionic arms replace those she lost as a baby. "Not having hands does not prevent me from reaching my goals", she assures in this interview to '20minutes'. Tilly Lockey, 13, lost her hands and part of her arms because of meningitis while she was still a baby. With his courage and some bionic arms he has become an example of overcoming.
Who is Tilly Lockey? Tell us your story... I was a normal, healthy and happy baby. With 15 months I became very sick. The doctor said he only had an ear infection. But I was finally diagnosed with meningitis, the worst case seen in this hospital. They told me I was not going to survive. I was in the ICU, I received up to ten blood transfusions, and in the end I managed to overcome the disease.
We have seen you playing the piano, dancing, making up... How is your day to day? Although I overcame meningitis, I still suffer its consequences. Recently my left leg has stopped growing. And, although I had surgery in September, now it does not double. That's why I have to go to the physiotherapist a lot. But, in general, I am a normal teenage girl. I go to the institute and at home I connect to my social networks. I have many followers and I am very active. I try to answer all the people who write to me. I record videos, edit them and upload them to my YouTube channel. I'm pretty busy!
The motto of our foundation is "Girls without Limits"... You are the best example of an Inspiring Girl, do you think girls have limits? Definitely not. When I was in the hospital they told me that I could never walk, run, dance or play the piano. And now I do everything. Not having hands does not prevent me from reaching my goals. You can do whatever you want while you have the right attitude. I hate when they tell me I cannot do things. Because I can. And the others too!
You have bionic arms. How is your life with them? Imagine that tomorrow you lose your hands... You would not know how to deal with it. These arms have helped increase my confidence. I can hold a cup, drag a suitcase or pick up a pen and write at the same time. These prostheses make my life easier.
You are a fighter. And your family has helped you a lot... One day, I had just lost my hands and was in the room with my mother. I wanted to go out and I asked my mother to open the door for me. But he said no. That I could do it alone. It had to be difficult for her to be a little cruel, but it made me the person that I am now. I owe everything, it's my great inspiration.
Where do you get the strength? Which is your super power? I think I'm like that because of how my parents raised me. I think my superpower is self-confidence. You can have a bad day, but nobody knows it less than you. Confidence in yourself determines how others see you. And that can really change your life and your way of living it.
What do you want to do for a living when you grow up? I would like to be a lecturer, because I have a story to tell. Inspire people to do something with their life and change the world. And, of course, continue working with Open Bionics, those who make their hands for me, to create the best hands in the world.
What message do you give to girls? Do not give up. Keep your head up because you can do whatever you want. Because, although people try to demotivate you, you should not think that you can not do things. Hold your head high and show them they are wrong.
What do you dream with? With the day when being different is fine. I think different people are unique, and that should be admired. I dream of the day when people wear bionic arms simply because they want to.

Tilly Lockey, de 13 años, perdió las manos y parte de los brazos a causa de una meningitis cuando todavía era un bebé. Con su coraje y unos brazos biónicos se ha convertido en un ejemplo de superación.
¿Quién es Tilly Lockey? Cuéntanos tu historia... Yo era un bebé normal, sano y feliz. Con 15 meses me puse muy enferma. El médico dijo que solo tenía una infección en los oídos. Pero finalmente me diagnosticaron meningitis, el peor caso que se había visto en este hospital. Me dijeron que no iba a sobrevivir. Estuve en la UVI, recibí hasta diez transfusiones de sangre, y al final logré superar la enfermedad.
Te hemos visto tocando el piano, bailando, maquillándote... ¿Cómo es tu día a día? Aunque superé la meningitis, sigo sufriendo sus consecuencias. Recientemente mi pierna izquierda ha dejado de crecer. Y, aunque me operaron en septiembre, ahora no se dobla. Por eso tengo que ir mucho al fisioterapeuta. Pero, en general, soy una chica adolescente normal. Voy al instituto y en casa me conecto a mis redes sociales. Tengo muchos seguidores y soy muy activa. Intento responder a todas las personas que me escriben. Grabo vídeos, los edito y los subo a mi canal de YouTube. ¡Estoy bastante ocupada!
El lema de nuestra fundación es "Niñas sin Límites"... Tú eres el mejor ejemplo de una Inspiring Girl, ¿piensas que las niñas tienen límites?Definitivamente, no. Cuando estaba en el hospital me dijeron que nunca podría andar, correr, bailar o tocar el piano. Y ahora lo hago todo. No tener manos no me impide alcanzar mis metas. Puedes hacer lo que quieras mientras tengas la actitud adecuada. Odio cuando me dicen que no puedo hacer cosas. Porque sí puedo. ¡Y los demás también!
Tienes brazos biónicos. ¿Cómo es tu vida con ellos? Imagínate que tú mañana pierdes tus manos... No sabrías cómo afrontarlo. Estos brazos han ayudado a aumentar mi confianza. Puedo sujetar una taza, arrastrar una maleta o coger un boli y escribir a la vez. Estas prótesis me hacen la vida más fácil.
Eres una luchadora. Y tu familia te ha ayudado mucho... Un día, acababa de perder las manos y estaba en la habitación con mi madre. Quería salir y le pedí a mi madre que me abriera la puerta. Pero me dijo que no. Que lo podría hacer sola. Tuvo que ser para ella difícil ser un poco cruel, pero me hizo ser la persona que soy ahora. Le debo todo, es mi gran inspiración.
¿De dónde sacas tú la fuerza? ¿Cuál es tu superpoder? Creo que soy así por cómo me han criado mis padres. Creo que mi superpoder es la confianza en mí misma. Puedes tener un mal día, pero nadie lo sabe menos tú. La confianza en ti misma determina como otros te ven. Y eso puede realmente cambiar tu vida y tu forma de vivirla.
¿Qué quieres ser de mayor? Me gustaría ser conferenciante, porque tengo una historia que contar. Inspirar a la gente para hacer algo con su vida y cambiar el mundo. Y, claro, seguir trabajando con Open Bionics, los que hacen las manos para mí, para crear las mejores manos del mundo.
¿Qué mensaje das a las niñas? Que no se rindan. Que mantengan la cabeza alta porque pueden hacer lo que quieran. Porque, aunque la gente intente desmotivarte, no debes pensar que no puedes hacer cosas. Mantén tu cabeza alta y demuéstrales que están equivocados.
¿Con qué sueñas? Con el día en que ser diferente esté bien. Creo que la gente diferente es única, y eso se debería admirar. Sueño con el día en que la gente lleve brazos biónicos simplemente porque quiera.
